The earth that is our home is the most precious place that is priceless. But if only Earth how much is this selling?
Greg Laughlin, assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, USA, has calculations on this. In his calculations, of course, Earth’s resources and the value they offer to humans add up to the real cost of the unknown.
“Humans don’t need to worry about buying or selling the Earth, but thinking about it in terms of concrete numbers can help us better understand its value,” Laughlin said as quoted by Mental Floss, Sunday (12/6/2020).
According to Laughlin, the Earth is worth around USD 5 quadrillion (USD 5,000,000,000,000,000) or if it is converted into it is around IDR 70 quintillion (IDR 70,000,000,000,000,000,000). He got that price after measuring the planet’s mass, temperature, age, and other factors directly correlated with its ability to sustain life.
To emphasize how valuable Earth, Laughlin also estimated the value of other planets in our solar system. For example, our closest neighbor, Mars, costs almost the same as a used car, which costs USD 16,000 (around Rp.226 million). Mars is luckier than Venus, the planet Laughlin costs just a penny.
“Of course I do not expect these calculated figures to be applied in the real world. On the contrary, I hope that it will inspire Earthlings to appreciate our one and only home more,” said Lauglin.
Actually Laughlin wasn’t the first to put a hypothetical tag on something. Previously, someone had calculated the Death Star price from Star Wars of USD 852 quadrillion, many times the estimate that Laughlin made for Earth.
