How Much Chocolate is Safe for Diabetics?

People with diabetes can still eat chocolate with a number of conditions.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Too much to eat chocolate can increase health risks for people with migraines, mental health problems, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Clinical nutritionist at Masina Hospital, Mumbai, Anam Golandaz says limiting consumption is key.

Reported Indian Express on Friday (8/7/2022), Golandaz explained that cocoa consists of flavonoids which are strong antioxidants. Flavonoids have many benefits, including increasing blood flow, reducing the risk of clotting, to lowering the risk of stroke and other coronary heart disease.

Flavonoids also improve brain function because they increase levels of serotonin or the happy hormone in the blood. In addition, cocoa is great for the skin.

Good quality chocolate contains polyphenols that promote the growth of good bacteria, such as lactobacillus. These bacteria are good for gut and gut health.

On the other hand, poor quality chocolate can put you at risk of infection. In terms of quantity, healthy people can consume 30-60 grams dark chocolate per day or 10-15 grams of chocolate milk per day.

Is chocolate recommended for diabetic patients?

Golandaz said, if diabetics follow a healthy and balanced diet according to their disease condition, then they can consume 20-30 grams of dark chocolate per day. However, if the person is not eating healthy, then the patient should avoid it.

Golandaz advises diabetics to consume dark chocolate which is low in sugar, calories, and saturated fat.

Cardiovascular patient

For cardiovascular patients, the quality and quantity of chocolate will make a difference. Like diabetic patients, Golandaz advises patients to consume dark chocolate in the same amount, which is 20-30 grams per day, provided they follow a balanced diet and do not consume added saturated fat.

Chocolate is also considered a food that can lower HDL levels, if consumed in the right amount and quality.
