Type and severity of symptoms are relevant

The Hamburg sports physician Michael Ehnert warns athletes against returning to competitions too early after a compulsory Corona break. You have to differentiate in the assessment “according to the type and severity of the symptoms”, according to the 58-year-old head of the Institute for Sports Medicine at the Asklepios Klinikum St. Georg in an interview with the “Hamburger Abendblatt”.

It makes a difference whether someone has been in bed with a fever for a week or has had an asymptomatic course. “At the very least, everyone should have their heart and lung function checked. There remains an undetermined risk of further complications from returning to sport too early, because training is different from exertion in competition,” added the expert.

Even professional athletes have to undergo an examination

There were eight corona cases among the professionals in the second division footballers at Hamburger SV last week. This octet was back in full training on Friday and could play again on Saturday in a guest appearance at Fortuna Düsseldorf. However, all the actors involved had to go to the Eppendorf University Clinic for an examination before they returned.

“From a medical point of view, there is no inevitable veto against a competitive match,” the Hamburg doctor continued. “But it has to be weighed up how important the game is and whether releasing it could be irresponsible, i.e. there is a concrete danger, also in terms of long-term consequences.” For this consideration, a sense of proportion is primarily required “and not a doctor’s word of power,” emphasized Ehnert. In addition, after the intensive consultation with the doctor, “the players, who are adults, also have personal responsibility.” (dpa / vho)
