Diabetes Risk Increases in Children Surviving Covid-19, Study – All Pages

Covid-19 increases the risk of diabetes in children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) United States, published the results of its latest research.

“People under the age of 18 with Covid-19 were more likely to be diagnosed with new diabetes more than 30 days after infection, than those without Covid-19 and those with pre-pandemic acute respiratory infections,” the study said.

In one data set, researchers found a 2.6-fold increase in diabetes cases among children.

Then in the second data, it was found that the increased risk of diabetes increased by 30%.

“Even a 30% increase is a huge increase in risk,” said Sharon Saydah, author and CDC researcher WebMD, Tuesday (11/01/2022).

The difference in the data is caused by different records classifying Covid-19 in children.

An increased risk of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes was found among children who had symptoms of Covid-19 and those who had no symptoms but who tested positive.

However, researchers are not sure whether type 2 diabetes experienced by children who have survived Covid-19 is chronic or only temporary.

The reason, they only conducted the study on children for four months.

Sharon Saydah said the results of this study were an indication that Covid-19 vaccination for children was important.

He also highlighted the use of masks and social distancing, to protect children who have not or cannot be vaccinated against Covid-19.

“It is very important for doctors, pediatricians, and parents to know the signs and symptoms of diabetes,” he said.

“So, they can diagnose (and carry out examinations) of their children,” he continued.
