Horse lover Laura Plantaz (35) from Boxtel is still in shock. She was at the railway crossing in the Boxtel district of Tongeren on Thursday evening where a train collided with a horse trailer. The horse that survived the collision was taken care of by Laura. “I jumped out of a moving car to run after it.”
The horse trailer suddenly came loose in the middle of the railway crossing. The driver and owner of the horses got out of the car and tried to get the horses out of the trailer, but at that moment the trailer was hit by a train. The man was seriously injured. One of the two horses in the trailer has died.
It is all still difficult for Laura to realize. She drove home to Boxtel in the car from Tilburg on Thursday evening with a colleague. When she got to the railroad crossing, she saw a train stopped. She didn’t know at the time that the train had just hit a horse trailer.
“I fell to the ground because I wanted to chase that horse as quickly as possible.”
She didn’t have much time to investigate, because Laura immediately saw something black running towards her. “It was a horse. I come from a family of horse lovers and immediately knew what I had to do.” Laura shouted at her colleague behind the wheel to turn the car around. “Because on the other side of the road there were cars and trucks. We had to go straight after the horse.”
When the car was close, Laura jumped out of the moving car. “I fell to the ground because I wanted to chase that horse as quickly as possible.” Not much later, Laura almost catches the horse. “I managed to calm the horse down and started talking to him. Then he even walked towards me.”
Laura held the horse by its halter and walked carefully back towards the railway crossing. “That horse was so sweet, but I wanted to be careful. Besides, I didn’t know yet what bad had happened. I thought, that horse probably escaped from the pasture.”
So she called 911 on the way. “Then I got the whole story. At that moment I suddenly heard sirens and the emergency services arrived.”
“I ended up walking around with the horse for almost two and a half hours.”
After they arrived, Laura saw the other horse lying by the track. The horse had serious injuries. “I shouted at the police thirty times to shoot that horse. I completely understand that they can’t just do that, but that horse couldn’t be saved. That was really bad to see. I could barely handle it.”
Meanwhile, Laura was still standing next to the black horse that had jumped out of the trailer in time. “I waited with the horse for two and a half hours and walked around in circles, because we couldn’t get through anything. Then I heard who owned the horse and that the owner had been seriously injured in the accident. I then put the horse in the owner’s stable. The police thanked me, but I was happy to do it.”
