Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis has been arrested in Italy. He was accused of raping a woman with a British passport.
The incident came to light after the woman looked sad at Brindisi airport. He turned out to be abandoned by Paul Haggis after days of holding him.
After being examined by a doctor, the woman was said to have rape wounds.
“I was raped for days. We were supposed to work together, but he raped me from Sunday night to Wednesday,” the victim told prosecutor Antonio Negro, as reported by The Daily Beast.
The woman was found by officers curled up in a corner of the airport in the early hours of the morning. He admitted that he did not have a plane ticket, then the officers gave him money.
“He was crushed. He spoke with difficulty,” the officer recounted.
The police then investigated the case. They looked at camera footage outside the hotel room where Paul Haggis and the woman were sitting,
The footage also proves they were together for a few days. Paul Haggis was arrested, he is now being held in the provincial capital Brindisi.
Paul Haggis’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, declined to comment on the case to The Hollywood Reporter. According to him, the legal reasons forbid him to comment on the case.
“I am sure that all charges will be rejected. He is completely innocent, and is willing to cooperate fully with the authorities so that the truth is revealed quickly,” he said.
Paul Haggis is the author of two Oscar best films, Million Dollar Baby in 2014 and Crash in 2005.
Paul Haggis is not the first time he has faced a sexual harassment lawsuit. Previously, she was in legal trouble after being reported by publicist Haleigh Breest in 2017. Three more women came forward a year later on charges of sexual harassment.
Previously, Haggis, who left the Church of Scientology in 2009, said the allegations emerged as retaliation for the church. But the accused denied the claim.
