History and Social Studies / Political Education – Gymnasium Zwettl

Live twice if you also enjoy the past.

In addition to the classic lessons in the class, where flower pots often fall victim to a hammer in order to make a dish in the Greek-ancient tradition, it is particularly important to us to teach the subject as much as possible experience in a practical way allow.

Training courses and excursions or history to touch

  • How big was a mammoth really?
  • What tools did people have back then?
  • How did the first humans make fire?
  • Where and how did you live?
  • What did they eat and how did they dress?

The Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Asparn / Zaya, always a worthwhile goal for our 2nd grades, lets the students immerse themselves in the world of people from prehistory and find answers. Not only posing in front of a lifelike model of a mammoth to get an impression of the mightiness of these animals, but also throwing a spear to experience how difficult it is to “kill” such a large animal, give a glimpse into that Life of these people as well as a tour through the various residential and commercial “buildings” (from a simple shed made of branches to a Neolithic house). Experiences like these not only enrich everyday school life, but also help to deepen what has been learned in school.

The Middle Ages in front of the school door 3rd and 5th grade pupils can discover that the city of Zwettl, with its city wall and many other sights, offers a number of opportunities to explore the traces of this thoroughly adventurous time, including a research assignment. A souvenir photo should of course not be missing.

“Oral history” – immediate history

Hermine Liska, contemporary witness

Conversations with those people who, for example, experienced the Nazi era and the associated events up close, deepen the content of the lessons. Encounters with contemporary witnesses enable social learning, strengthen empathy and help to make unimaginable moments in our history a bit more understandable.

Politics affects us all!

Politics takes place wherever decisions are made. For example, a direct conversation with actors from this area can create awareness by organizing your own demonstration, interesting Discussions with politicians organized or also Court hearings be experienced. Also participating in various projects like the Youth Parliament in Vienna – not only exploring the federal capital, but also being able to slip into the role of a politician for a day – offers the opportunity to express your opinion and shape our democracy.
