Hispanic police officer saves man in wheelchair from being run over by train

Los Angeles California – A Hispanic police officer in the city of Lodi, California, is being praised for her heroism after she rescued a man in a wheelchair who was stuck on a track seconds before a train sped past.

Officer Erika Urrea was making her daily rounds in Lodi Wednesday morning when she saw a man in an electric wheelchair who appeared to be stuck on the train tracks.

The agent noticed that the emergency barriers at the railroad crossing began to lower and saw a train approaching at high speed. She immediately got out of her squad car and started running towards the man while calling for more help.

The actions were registered in the body camera of the agent. The images were revealed by the Lodi Police Department, and they show the action of the agent. Urrea reaches where the man is and tries to unblock the wheelchair, but when he sees that the train has already reached them, he decides to remove the man from the chair and they both fall to the ground.

The camera recorded the speeding train of the train very close to the two of them.

The 66-year-old man suffered a leg injury and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“Officer Urrea risked her own life to save someone else and her actions averted a tragedy. We are very proud of Officer Erika Urrea and her heroism, ”the Lodi Police Department said in a statement.

The video, which was posted on the Department’s social networks, reached more than 175,000 views on YouTube in a few hours, and hundreds of comments applauding the officer’s work.

Lodi is located in Northern California, in San Joaquin County. It is a mostly white city.
