Hanover (dpa / lni) – Lower Saxony’s finance minister Reinhold Hilbers (CDU) currently sees little financial scope for more staff in daycare centers due to the pandemic. The same amount of money could not be spent as before the pandemic, said Hilbers in an interview with the “Neue Presse” (Saturday). Especially not for projects that cost the country long-term costs.

“The legal right to all-day care in primary schools would cost the state 800 million euros annually, which is currently difficult to realize,” said Hilbers. The third daycare worker is “currently only difficult to implement,” said the CDU politician. “At the moment it is better to pause and see how the situation in Lower Saxony is developing. Loans have to be repaid. We must therefore be able to quickly focus on growth again,” said Hilbers.

Due to time pressure with the planned daycare law, the CDU and SPD want to meet on Sunday for a coalition committee in the Lower Saxony state parliament. The core of the consultations should be the child-specialist key for day-care centers, i.e. the question of whether and how more staff can be made binding for day-care centers. The fact that the bill so far did not contain any regulation on the so-called third force had caused criticism across Lower Saxony.

The Greens in Lower Saxony’s state parliament criticized Hilbers for being the “savings commissioner”. The parliamentary group leader Julia Willie Hamburg called the savings made by the finance minister “negligent”. “This not only affects the children in daycare centers and schools and their families, who were already among those particularly affected by the Corona crisis. It affects many other areas.” Many would wait for progress in areas such as climate protection, housing construction and digitization.
