Bye-Week: Broncos, Rams

The game of the week

Kansas City Chiefs (5-4) – Dallas Cowboys (7-2) (So., 22.25 Uhr)

  • 41 points against the raiders! Is that the end of the Chiefs offense back? Not necessarily. On the one hand, Patrick Mahomes did not play flawlessly despite the outstanding statistics, on the other hand, Las Vegas hardly acted from the two-high looks that had caused Kansas City such problems this year. Dan Quinn, Defensive Coordinator of the Cowboys, is also actually a supporter of a single high defense. Is Quinn changing his style against the Chiefs? And if so: do the chiefs finally have answers against this type of defense?
  • The Chiefs have to do without right tackle Lucas Niang on the offensive line, Andrew Wylie will start for him. Wylie wobbled noticeably for the past two weeks. Dallas’ pass rush is good but has to do without Randy Gregory after DeMarcus Lawrence. Micah Parsons could get a lot of snaps again as a pass rusher and make life difficult for Mahomes.
  • On the other hand, the cowboys have to cope with a bitter loss: Amari Cooper will not be able to play due to a corona infection, so Michael Gallup, who returned the previous week after a long break, should immediately play a major role again. It is undisputed that Dak Prescott and Co. have the firepower to attack the Chiefs’ defense and thus to be able to go along in a shootout.
  • There is still a question mark behind Tyron Smith. If the left tackle can return, it would be a huge boost for the guests’ O-Line, Terence Steele struggled as Smith’s replacement. With the best line-up, Dallas has one of the best lines in the league, the pass rush of the Chiefs is so far no power, even if new signing Melvin Ingram helps. If Dallas can control the line of scrimmage in offense, that would be a first step towards an away win.

Philadelphia Eagles (4-6) – New Orleans Saints (5-4) (So., 19.00 Uhr)

  • The Eagles have built their offense almost from scratch. The offensive identity of the team is now the run game around quarterback Jalen Hurts with occasional shot plays in the passing game. Over the past few weeks, this change has borne fruit – against New Orleans, the game plan could be more difficult to implement: The Saints have perhaps the best run defense in the league, the Titans dominated in this area last week. So is Philly adapting his tactics? Or is head coach Nick Sirianni still trying to pull off the running game?
  • On the side of the Saints Trevor Siemian will start again, who has done his job well so far. The Eagles play what is probably the simplest defense in the NFL, here Sean Payton should be able to create a few plays in the passing game. Problematic, however: With Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk, both offensive tackles are canceled at the Saints, and Alvin Kamara will not be able to play again. There could be a defensive game in the city of brotherly love.

New York Jets (2-7) – Miami Dolphins (3-7) (So., 19.00 Uhr)

  • No Zach Wilson, but no Mike White either! The rookie quarterback won’t be returning to the field this week either. It is not entirely clear whether he is actually not yet fit or whether New York wants to avoid the lightning-intensive scheme of the Dolphins. One thing is certain, however: After his weak performance against the Bills, White is going back to the bench, Joe Flacco is supposed to start for Gang Green. The former Ravens quarterback is by far the most experienced of the trio. It remains to be seen whether he will find answers in practice against the aggressive defense of the guests.
  • On the side of the Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa will return to the starting lineup. In the previous week he led Miami to victory in the second half, but also benefited from a dominant defense. The Jets should be a good matchup for the former Alabama star’s return: New York’s defense is a huge disappointment, with the team conceding over 40 points three times and over 30 each time in their last four games.

Carolina Panthers (5-5) – Washington Football Team (3-6) (So., 19.00 Uhr)

  • “I’m baaaack!” After Cam Newton played his first game after his return to the Panthers the previous week, this week is his first start for his new, old team – of all things against Ron Rivera, his former head coach and sponsor. With Christian McCaffrey, Newton should be able to rebuild a good chemistry quickly, but the wobbly offensive line could become a problem against the football team – even if Chase Young is out for the rest of the season, a bitter loss for Washington.
  • With the guests, Taylor Heinicke showed his strongest performance in a long time in the surprising victory over the Bucs in the previous week. With the Panthers, however, the football team is now facing one of the strongest defenses in the NFL. Stephon Gilmore should take care of star receiver Terry McLaurin, tight end Ricky Seals-Jones will be absent due to injury. After all: Curtis Samuel may be celebrating his comeback – he would then also meet his former team immediately.

Buffalo Bills (6-3) – Indianapolis Colts (5-5) (So., 19.00 Uhr)

  • After the bad performance against the Jaguars, Buffalo returned with an impressive performance against the Jets last week. Josh Allen played well, and the Bills also proved that they can run against opponents who primarily want to defend the pass, for example from I-formations with a fullback. The Colts are a different caliber this week. Indianapolis’ front around DeForest Buckner and Darius Leonard can defend the run without pulling any additional safety equipment into the pits. But: Can the cornerbacks of the guests survive in a direct duel with Stefon Diggs and Co.?
  • The Colts, in turn, come to the east coast with a less convincing victory over the Jaguars. Against the outstanding defense of the Bills, the offense around quarterback Carson Wentz will have to present itself much better, if you don’t want to go under. Against the strong pass rush, Wentz could come under pressure and then have to see that he remedied the hair-raising mistakes that were recurring recently. The running game around Jonathan Taylor can be dominant, but will also be put to the test against the strong front of the hosts.
