The measure, according to the United States, is taking action against illegal European subsidies for aircraft manufacturer Airbus. The World Trade Organization (WTO) stipulated last year that Washington may impose $ 7.5 billion in criminal charges on European goods because the EU has failed to stop illegal subsidies to Airbus.
The aircraft manufacturer says in a statement that the higher rate will mainly affect American airlines. They suffer from a shortage of devices. Airbus hopes that the American authorities will change their mind.
Mobile Alabama
Airbus builds part of the aircraft at the factory in the American city of Mobile in the state of Alabama. In January it was announced that Airbus is going to build more aircraft in the United States.
The A320neo production at the Alabama plant will be increased from five to seven aircraft per month at the beginning of next year, the aircraft manufacturer announced.
With the production increase, Airbus meets the enormous demand for the A320neo family, for which more than six thousand orders are still in the books. Spread over all factories, the company wants to produce 63 of these devices every month in 2021.
An additional advantage of a production increase in Alabama is that the aircraft that are built here are exempt from import duties. Since October, the US has been charging “foreign” Airbussen with ten percent in retaliation for illegal subsidies in the development of the A350 and A380. In Mobile, the only American factory of the European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus is building the A220 in addition to the A320neo family. As previously announced, the production of that device is gradually being increased to four a month by the middle of this decade. Airbus expects the investments in the Mobile plant to create 275 new jobs next year.
