High school students need more attention for depression and anxiety, according to the Avanzo test

The Minister of Education, Carla Hananía de Varela, revealed the results of the socio-emotional study of the Avanzo test whose findings show that thehe female students are the most likely to suffer from depression and anxiety during the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the results, a 13.4% of the students who were tested need care for depression and a 24.2% for anxiety, In both cases, women are more susceptible to being depressed (16.9%), compared to 10.3% of men.

While in the results of anxiety, 37.1% of women are more likely to suffer from it.

Although women are the most vulnerable, they are the most motivated to study for a university degree. Another piece of data from the test that the departments of San Salvador, San Miguel, Chalatenango and Cuscatlán are the ones with the highest depression index.

Other data provided includes aspects such as empathy, which according to the test, 79.2% of the students subjected to the test show a level of understanding and tolerance with other people,

62.6% have control and mastery of their emotions while 96.5% are motivated to continue with future projects and 51.1% of students control emotions and thoughts.

The test also focused on how students developed their social skills with their friends and within their community.

The pandemic

The Ministry of Education carried out the Socio-emotional Advance test with the Fundación pro Educación de El Salvador (FUNPRES) to assess the state of young people during the covid-19 quarantine and find out under what conditions they will choose a university road.

According to the test 49.6% of the students had a slight alteration during the pandemic, in other words, they did not have direct communication with their friends and 1.2% had a serious alteration, that is, a distance from their friends and the community. The rest, 49.2% knew how to adapt.

While in the family environment, the students maintained a stable relationship and knew how to adapt, but 54% had slight alterations.

The test also showed that 72.9% of the students tested want to pursue a university degree, 21.7% want to find a job after graduation, 2.9% want to migrate abroad and 0.5% want to start a family.

The study was delimited into two groups, the difference between men and women and those who come from the public and private sectors.

The difference in future projections between men and women yielded the following result:

  • More women want to continue their university studies.
  • More men want to take a break when they finish high school.
  • More men want to start a family at the end of their high school education.
  • More men want to get a job.
  • More men want to migrate

While the division between public and private was as follows:

  • Students from private institutions wish to pursue their university studies.
  • More students from the public sector want to take a break.
  • More high school graduates from the public sector want to start a family.
  • Students in the public sector want to get a job more than students in the private sector.
  • More students from the private sector want to study; the ministry explained that this is why they go out to study.
  • Students from the private sector also have a higher rate of depression, greater social and family disruption due to the pandemic.

Projects for the 2021 school year

Minister Hananía assured that for the 2021 school year, plans are maintained for the return of face-to-face classes, for now, they want to reinforce the virtual class system with multiplatform teaching, continue the training of teachers in terms of education online and equip both teachers and students with equipment that allows the development of virtual classes.

Also, the implementation of mobile classrooms, which would help children and young people who live in areas where, at the signal of the different telephone companies present in the country and with whom agreements on the subject of connectivity are already being discussed, they can continue with their studies. .
