Here’s How to Upgrade Storage on PS5

Jakarta

Sony finally activated the M.2 slot that was on the PlayStation 5 (PS5) to increase the data storage capacity in the new console.

For now, the feature is available in beta via the newly released PS5 software update. There are conditions that must be met to be able to use the M.2 slot to increase this data storage capacity.

The first requirement is that the type of SSD used is at least PCIe Gen4. Sony recommends an SSD with a speed of 5.5GB/s, but those with speeds below that may still work as long as it’s a PCIe Gen4 type.

Then the minimum capacity is 250GB, the PS5 system will reject the SSD if the capacity is below that. If the SSD used is below 5.5GB/s speed, the system will only give a warning, but the SSD can still be used.

Cara Upgrade Storage PS5

  • This M.2 slot can be accessed by opening the side panel of the PS5, and the slot position is next to the fan, precisely on the side that holds the Bluray disc drive. Don’t forget to unplug the power cable first before doing this.
  • To open the M.2 slot cover you need a screwdriver, and once opened there is a screw inside to lock the SSD into the M.2 slot.
  • Oh yes, Sony also recommends using an SSD that has a heatsink for cooling. Relax, if your SSD does not have a heatsink, you can buy a heatsink separately and the price is relatively affordable.
  • Once done, turn on the PS5. If the SSD used is not compatible, a warning will appear that the PS5 requires a PCIe Gen4 SSD with a minimum capacity of 250GB and a maximum of 4TB.
  • Then you will be asked to format the SSD. Make sure you don’t save important data on the SSD because it will be lost when formatted.

The format process runs quickly, in seconds, and when it’s finished, the PS5 will perform a speed test and provide an alert asking the user to move the game to internal storage if there’s a problem.

M.2 SSD support is still in beta, and SSD manufacturers haven’t stated much about their SSD compatibility for the PS5. So far, only Seagate has confirmed the FireCuda 530’s compatibility with the PS5.
