Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s ‘Sherlock’, star in film and television

Throughout life, Sherlock Holmes’s main ‘competitor’ as a literary investigator has been Hercule Poirot, the little Belgian detective created by the peerless Agatha Christie.

Insufferable, obnoxious, pompous, heavy and egocentric.” This is how Agatha Christie thought of her most famous, most iconic character, the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, protagonist of no less than 33 novels and 50 short stories of the ‘queen of crime’.

A little man barely 1.62 meters tall, attached to a straight mustache and a hat. Impeccably dressed, Taliban of order and rectitude in all his affections. Former member of the Belgian police who arrives as a refugee in Great Britain in World War I, and who establishes himself as a private detective, with great success. And with his own ‘Watson’, Captain Harold Hastings.

A colleague of Sherlock Holmes, Poirot is the complete antithesis of Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation, as the Belgian detective, far from Holmes’s ‘visual’ ability to find the most hidden clues, uses his gray cells to always ‘travel’ to the killer’s mind and unmask him.

Without even remotely reaching the presence of Holmes in film and television, Poirot has also been the protagonist of a good number of productions.

‘DEATH ON THE NILE’ (2022, theaters and soon on Disney +). Today another directorial work by Kenneth Branagh arrives in theaters (after the recent Belfast). Death on the Nile is the second part of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, which Branagh also directed and starred in, as Poirot, in 2017. If in this the female star was Penelope Cruz, in Death on the Nile the ‘queen of the screen’ is Israeli actress GalGadot, whom we knew well as the superheroine Wonderwoman.

‘THE MYSTERY OF THE RAILWAY GUIDE’ (2018, Movistar+). If someone can be the most opposed, in principle, to the literary Poirot, that could be the great John Malkovich. But the unforgettable Valmont of Dangerous Liaisons offers us a very interesting Poirot.

‘HERCULES POIROT’ (1989-2013, Filmin). The quintessential Poirot on television is David Suchet, who played the Belgian detective for 13 seasons (70 episodes). And, like the literary Poirot, he died in the last chapter, Curtain.

‘DEATH UNDER THE SUN’ (1982, Filmin). Peter Ustinov is to date the most remembered face of Poirot in the cinema, as he played the little detective on no less than six occasions, between 1978 and 1988.

‘DEATH ON THE NILE’ (1978, Filmin). Alongside Ustinov, none other than Mia Farrow, Jane Birkin, David Niven, Bette Davis… act in this version of Branagh’s film.

‘MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS’ (1974, Filmin). Directed by Sidney Lumet, the considered best film adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel featured Albert Finney as Hercule Poirot. And, among other great stars like Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman won the Oscar for best supporting actress.
