This week, for the fourth time, the Baltic Film Days will take place, where Lithuanian and Estonian films will be available free of charge (meanwhile, Latvian films are also offered to viewers in both countries). On August 25, two Lithuanian films will be screened, and on August 26 – two films from Estonia. On Lithuanian Day, we will see a feature film awarded at several festivals “New Lithuania” (2019), which takes place in 1938, when a real historical figure, a professor of geography tried to persuade the government to save Lithuania from an already imminent historical catastrophe by creating a “reserve state” on another continent.

Lithuania will also be represented by a documentary screened at more than 40 festivals “Acid Forest ” (“Acid Forest”, 2018), an ironic and black humor – filled story about a pine forest destroyed by … cormorants.

Estonian neighbors offer a feature film “Scandinavian Silence ”(“Scandinavian Silence”, 2019), co – produced by Estonia, France and Belgium, is a psychological drama with elements of tension that fills a seemingly simple journey of a boy and a girl in a car with the shadows of the past and unsolved problems. In turn, in the genre of Estonian documentary cinema, a real sweet dish for me, a theater critic, is the film “All year in the theater ”(“ The Year Full of Drama“, 2019) for an experiment in which a Russian-speaking young girl wins a competition in which a man who has never been to the theater as a job is offered a year to visit it intensively and describe his impressions on the blog.

On Wednesday, the Latvian Academy of Arts student fashion show will traditionally take place, which will be broadcast online for the first time this year. The central theme of the fashion show is the interaction of fashion, art and space, and it will serve as a symbolic return to the basic values ​​or treasures of the academy. Thus, the Latvian Academy of Arts has been chosen as the venue for the collection parade, which is unique with its expressive architecture and artistic interior.

The LMA student fashion show will present the costume collections created during the last academic year, which represent both functional “ready-to-wear” clothes and an eccentric avant-garde style.

Heda Gablere after 130 years

In the brand new cultural space “Točka”, the premiere of playwrights Linda Rudene and the new director Beatrice Zaķe and the play “Heda. Human ”. Henrik Ibsen’s play “Heda Gablere” was written at the end of the 19th century and postulated the woman, who instinctively opposes the traditional role of a doll and the mother of the family, as unhappy and deadly. The creators of the show believe that in one hundred and thirty years the model of society’s existence has completely changed. Isn’t it? Neither a horse nor a tiger

In Riga, at the Photo Museum, there is a solo exhibition of photographer Alnis Stakles “Neither Horse nor Tiger.” So far, the photographer’s work has been associated with laconic, sometimes even ascetic constructivism. , a bright exhibition in which even the poorest corners of China ‘s metropolises look colorful and inviting as a photo of an advertising brochure – and yet not quite like that.

Once upon a time, together with Pēteris Krilovs, Zani Kreicbergs and Gundega Laiviņš, we founded the New Theater Institute, and Gundega has led it for the last 15 years, introducing the “different” festival “Homo Novus” on the Latvian cultural map. This autumn it will take place in Riga and Cesis. Although created in a very short time, all the performances included in the program talk about complex and implicit issues, representing artists not only from Latvia, but also from Great Britain, Hong Kong, Italy, Norway and Chile. All festival events this year are free. Despite travel restrictions that are incompatible with an international live art event, the festival has found a way to offer an international program while keeping foreign artists in their cities and homes.

Most of the program, together with the artists, is made up of a wide variety of peers and communities, as well as spectators.

The festival program offers new works by Latvian artists Krista Burāne, Artūrs Čukurs, Kirils Ēčs, Anda Lāce, Jana Jacuka, Laura Stašāne, Guna Zariņa and GolfClayderman. Viewers will also experience joint works by foreign and Latvian artists. One festival performance will also take place in Cēsis – “Svidanka” is a work co-authored and performed by minors of Cēsis Educational Institution. This is the last festival created under the direction of the curator of the program Gundega Laiviņa. The next festival will be formed by the new team of the Latvian New Theater Institute, led by artistic director Beck Berger.
