“Hell from day one”

In 1995 Lady Diana made the British Crown tremble with the famous BBC interview in which, referring to the constant presence of Camilla Parker Bowles in her husband’s life Charles of England, he called his marriage “A little too crowded”. But three months before those public declarations, the princess had already revealed all her unhappiness as a bride during a chat with the journalist Sir Max Hastings, former chief editor of the Daily Telegraph. To which he had revealed: “My marriage was hell from the start.”

Adding that her husband was not “fit to be king”: “On the throne he should ascend William».

Hastings has kept the secret of his conversation with the princess for twenty-five years. But now, in the new documentary Diana: The Truth Behind the Interview, he recounted every detail of that “touching” dialogue that lasted a couple of hours: “First of all it was clear to me how much Diana hated Carlo. Yes, he hated it. When I asked her if there had ever been any happy moments she replied: “No, the wedding was hell from day one». Diana confided to the reporter that for her the most important thing was William’s accession to the throne of England: “She told me quite explicitly:”I don’t think Carlo is capable of being king ”. She wanted her husband to step aside and leave the crown to the eldest son“. The princess then asked Sir Max if he knew anything about one conspiracy against her: «I replied that it seemed to me madness. But she believed in that kind of thing. I really was sorry for his vulnerability».

The new revelations come just as it’s about to air the fourth season of The Crown, which promises to lay bare the royal wedding. An unhappy and “a little too crowded” marriage that Charles of England himself, two years ago, defined “A huge mistake”.
