In Ghent, a serious fire broke out on Saturday morning in the packaging company Tropack along the Antwerpsesteenweg. The fire is very fierce and is therefore very difficult to fight. Due to the heavy smoke development, the police and fire brigade are asking local residents to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire broke out about a quarter to five Saturday morning. This is reported by the local police. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but a lot of packaging material is present in the company. Due to the enormous heat in the shed, it is not possible to send people in,” says Bjorn Brion, spokesperson for the Ghent fire brigade.

“We were also unable to determine a seat of the fire yet.” The fire has to be extinguished from a distance, which complicates the work. The fire brigade arrived with heavy pumping material.

The fire caused heavy smoke development. “Due to the wind, the plume of smoke is drifting towards the R4,” explains police spokesman Bart De Cocker of the local police in Ghent. “We would therefore urge the people from Sint-Amandsberg, Oostakker and Lochristi to keep windows and doors closed.”
