Heavy rains lead to landslides in Sicily

Heavy rains have caused much inconvenience on the Italian island of Sicily. Landslides and tunnels were flooded along the northeast coast. Cars were also affected by the storm – the vehicles got stuck in the mud. The mud also poured into the houses.

Italian rescuers had to intervene at least 150 times. In several places, motorists were blocked by landslides. They were rescued by the emergency services.

In Milazzo an ambulance traveling due to a heart attack report got stuck. The vehicle was largely submerged in water. Ten people were also trapped in an art institute at that location.

Due to the storm, the A20 motorway had to be partially closed. The mayor of Milazzo has invited residents to stay at home for the time being. “The situation is under control, but the roads are flooded due to the huge rainfall.”

According to the authorities, 220 millimeters of rain fell in some places in three hours. By way of comparison: In the Netherlands, an average of about 800 millimeters falls per year.
