The Sunday meal between a 64-year-old man and his partner turned into a real disaster when the sixty-year-old, driving his Dodge Ram, crashed, around 6 p.m., into a Mercedes and then three other cars before ending up in wrong way on Dorpsstraat, in Houthalen-Helchteren. In total, 14 vehicles were involved in the accident.
“Four cars were hit in the Dirpsstraat and nine others on the Souwstraat,” said the affected police area. “The emergency services immediately went to the scene in large numbers. There are several seriously injured ”. Quickly, the witnesses implicate the excessive speed of the driver of the Dodge. A video also proves that the sixty-year-old drove much too fast.
Charges that have hurt the family tremendously. In the columns of the Nieuwsblad, it defends the main party concerned. “We have received a lot of messages on social networks since Sunday evening with very brutal threats. He is presented as the greatest criminal. He absolutely does not deserve this. He was 64, had 50 years of hard work and had never had anything to do with drugs or heavy drinking, ”she says.
Claims confirmed by the Limburg provider since the tests show no trace of alcohol or drugs. A medical investigation must now determine what happened. For the family, the explanations are to be found on this side. “A month ago, he had a complete blackout at home. He then went for an MRI which showed he had had a small heart attack. Since then, he has been taking anticoagulants to prevent him from passing out like that again ”explains another member of the family.
According to their statements, he would have had a new “blackout” at the level of the legs, which would explain that he accelerated so much. “Why he ended up on the other path is still a mystery to us.”
Today, the couple are doing “reasonably well” even though the woman had to spend the night in intensive care. For the 60-year-old, “physically he’s doing reasonably well, but mentally he’s taken a hell of a beating. The investigation will soon confirm that there was a medical cause. I hope my father’s name can be washed away then. Because he absolutely does not deserve that ”.
