The Dutch handball players booked a hard-fought 32-30 victory over Qatar on Thursday at the World Cup. The team of national coach Staffan Olsson was lagging behind for a long time, but fought back well in the final phase and thus remains promising in the main phase.
The Netherlands did not start convincingly in the Polish Katowice against Qatar, which took silver at the World Cup in 2015. Halfway through, the Dutch trailed 15-19. In the second half, the picture tilted and Olsson’s team took the victory.
Rutger ten Velde and Kay Smits were the top scorers on the Dutch side with eight goals. Niels Versteijnen (six hits) also found the net regularly.
Because the Netherlands was allowed to take the points from the victory over Argentina from the preliminary phase, the team is in second place in the main phase with four points from three games. A place in the top two is enough for a ticket to the quarterfinals.
The Orange will take on Germany on Saturday. The main phase will be concluded on Monday with a match against Serbia.
The Dutch handball players are present for the first time in sixty years at a World Cup, which will be held in Poland and Sweden this year. In 1961, the Orange stranded on its debut in the group stage.
