Just a few seconds after the final whistle Second division duels of the HSV footballers with Holstein Kiel sounded the song “My Hamburg I love me very much” by the band Abschlach on Monday evening! from the loudspeakers of the Volkspark Stadium. “I had a hard day and had to get out again …”, it says at the beginning of the homage to the Hanseatic city. Many of the HSV players, some of whom fell on the lawn, may have had exactly this wish at these moments: just get away after a bitter day’s work and switch off somewhere. Because of the late goal to the 3: 3 final score, the home side missed the jump to second place.
And considering that there were already three goals conceded in injury time in the past five games, all of which led to loss of points, the question almost automatically arose: “Has HSV not slept well enough for the promotion?”
Hecking: “We have to work on us”

Recurrent negligence in the final stages
In any case, it can hardly be a coincidence that the Hamburgers always concede avoidable goals shortly before the end of the season. At the 2: 2 in Fürth the North Germans slumbered after a corner kick in the collective. In Stuttgart (2: 3) the team of Counter coach Dieter Hecking seconds before the final whistle. And now against Kiel the HSV in the third minute of stoppage time was unable to prevent an actually harmless attack by the opponent. Substitute Gideon Jung and Xavier Amaechi watched more or less listlessly as Stefan Thesker took a cross from Emmanuel Iyoha and put it through to Jae-sung Lee, who overcame the falling out goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck. That defender Timo Letschert went a moment too late in front of the Thesker pass and thus lifted the offside – it fit into the overall picture of a Hamburg team defending miserably in this situation.
HSV a case for the psychologist?
“We should only have made it over time,” Hecking mourned the missed victory and demanded from his team: “We have to work on ourselves and stay focused.” However, the time to learn from the (always the same) mistakes is running out. Perhaps a “soul plumber” will help to stop the recurring second sleep in the final phase. Hecking, at any rate, is at a loss as to why his professionals regularly lose their lead. Finding an answer to whether this was a head problem “would probably be something for the psychologist,” said the trainer.
Ilias Moschos, mental trainer and mental coach from Krefeld, tried exactly this in a conversation with NDR 2. “It is always an interaction between body, psyche and the mental level. If we look at the results of HSV in the last games in which A goal is scored in stoppage time, which costs HSV victory, then you also have to seriously deal with the mental area, because that can indicate a lack of concentration, “said Moschos. His advice: “Preparation is always the be-all and end-all.”
