Government Will Uncover 10 Major Corruption in Papua

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Polhukam), Mahfud MD stated that the government will take action against cases of suspected corruption in Papua.

He said there were about 10 identified cases of misuse of state funds, aka corruption. The authorities, he said, would immediately enforce the law on suspected corruption cases in Papua.

“So far, there may be questions about why the corruption is there allowed. We have now determined the 10 biggest corruption cases, “Mahfud said in a press conference at his office, Jakarta, Wednesday (19/5).

Mahfud explained that the data was the result of an audit conducted by the Indonesian Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) or an investigation by the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).

“This will be done by law enforcement against them,” he added.

According to Mahfud, this is part of a series of government policies that will be taken to deal with problems in Papua.

Apart from enforcing laws related to corruption, said Mahfud, the government is also preparing to increase special autonomy funds, political opportunities, and quotas for indigenous Papuans in Parliament.

“The government continues to adopt a welfare, peaceful, non-violent approach. Those are the basic principles,” he added.

The National Police’s Intelligence and Security Agency (Baintelkam) had previously revealed BPK’s findings regarding the alleged corruption of Papua’s Special Autonomy funds. This was disclosed in the 2021 Police Leadership Meeting (Rapim) forum in 2021 last February.

From the results of the investigation by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), there is waste and ineffectiveness in the use of the budget. Apart from that, there is mark up or price inflation in the procurement of a number of public facilities in the Papua region.

“Then the fictitious payment in hydropower development is around Rp. 9.67 billion. It was found that there was misappropriation of funds amounting to more than Rp1.8 trillion,” said Karoanalis Baintelkam Polri Brig. Gen. Achmad Kartiko in his presentation broadcast on the Youtube channel Tribrata TV, Wednesday (17/2).
