The statements of the workers of the shipping company European Navigation, who on Monday 12/2 lived the nightmare at their workplace in Glyfada, are shocking.
We remind you that the 76-year-old Aris, as he was called, broke in armed and killed the owner of the shipping company Maria Karnesi, the managing director, Antonis Vlasakis, who was married to Maria Karnesi’s sister, and a former captain, Ilias Koukoulari, who worked at accounting office of the company, with a short-barreled carbine, while he also had a revolver with him. He then turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger, ending his own life.
“I had seen that Ares he had gone to Mrs. Despina’s office and locked it. After taking the keys, he threw them on the stairs” said one of the workers.
“He moved towards the office of Maria Karnesi. I approached him to calm him down. He continued down the hall and I told him to stop. Then I see he’s holding a gun. I immediately pushed his hand and he said to me “get out of the way, you have a good family and I don’t want to kill you. I will finish off those who want to kick me out of the house,” he adds.
The “inflated” bank accounts
The authorities continue to search for the motive that armed the hand of the attacker. His bank accounts and mobile phone, his relationships with members of the shipping family and the weapons he used in the massacre have come under the microscope. The pieces of the puzzle are expected to be joined by the testimonies of the eyewitnesses, especially Despina Karnesi.
According to the report of Vassilis Lambropoulos, police editor of “To Vima” and “Ta Nea” newspapers, the perpetrator had an account at City Bank in Switzerland together with his sister. 1.5 million euros have been deposited into this account and it currently only has 1,500 euros. In this particular bank there were corporate accounts of the shipping companies of the Karnesi family.
Also, according to the same sources, he has 500,000 euros in a Greek bank, where the 50,000 euros of compensation from the dismissal had gone.
The house where the perpetrator lived and which was given to him by the Karnezis family belongs to Spyros Karnezis according to the documentary evidence from the Land Registry.
The social environment of the 76-year-old is under the microscope
As the 76-year-old Aris had no family in Greece, the authorities are trying to identify the people who made up his social circle.
The goal is to take depositions and understand, from this side as well, what has happened. Also, answers are expected to be given about who he spoke with just before he put the weapons in the travel bag and went to the company.
The shipping company, in a statement, said the 76-year-old was fired in March 2023 and received 76,000 euros in compensation.
He was then hired by a company opened by Spyros Karnesis, and as it turns out, he would not be left without a home, as Maria Karnesis would not be able to evict him since the apartment is in her brother’s name.

“With indescribable pain yesterday, February 12, 2024, our company and all our executives experienced an unimaginable tragedy, in which a common killer, without any motive known to us, executed Maria Karnesi, Antonis Vlassakis, its owners and bosses of our company, as well as the heroic Captain Ilias Koukoularis, our valuable and loyal partner for decades, while by sheer luck Miss Karnesi Vlassaki, owner of our company, escaped with her life.
This act, completely immoral and criminal, is not only heinous but there is no way it can be justified by anyone. However, since, despite the tragic moments, various stories are heard, which have not the slightest relation to reality, we must clarify the following:
The murderer’s employment contract with our company was terminated on 31.3.2023, that is, almost a year ago and he had received as compensation the amount of 74,862 euros. Since then this man has not employed either our company or Antonis Vlassakis, Despina Karnesi and Maria Karnesi and as far as we know he provided his services as a caretaker at the estate of another member of the Karnesi family in Petalios, with whom the murdered men and Despina Karnesi are Petalios. they had no relation whatsoever.
Never did the company or Maria Karnesi grant the murderer a house to live in Glyfada, and rather when the house mentioned on Tsitsani Street no. 16 does not belong either to the deceased or to the company so that it is possible that Maria Karnesi told him to vacate it. Besides, as we well know the killer had no financial need since he had bank accounts with particularly large cash reserves. Therefore, how and why the murderer decided to carry out this criminal act is not known to us and is being investigated.
We want to assure our employees both on land and on the ships managed by our company that our company, under the guidance of Ms. Despina Karnesi, will survive even after this nightmarish tragedy and continue its operation, succeeding in future the same brilliant results as the past.
We ask everyone to respect the memory of Captain Ilias Koukoularis, as well as Maria Karnesis and Antonis Vlassakis who ultimately – literally and not only figuratively – gave their lives for our company and our shipping group. Let everyone also respect the pain of Despina who in one moment lost everything to a cold and unrepentant killer. Heartfelt condolences to the family of Captain Ilias, Maria and Mrs. Despina and their relatives.”
