Get to know the M1, the first chipset Apple made for the new Mac

Suara.com – Apple introduce the M1 chipset, the first processor made by Apple, on Wednesday (11/11/2020) in the morning. This launch was carried out in conjunction with the release of Apple’s latest Mac series.

Reporting from Apple’s official website, the technology company from the United States claims that the M1 chip can produce extraordinary performance and efficiency in its latest Mac series.

“There has never been a chip like this. For more than a decade we are preparing to make a chip that will usher in a new era for the Mac,” said Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji.

M1 itself is the first personal computer chip made using 5nm processor technology with the support of 16 billion transistors. This gives the M1 chipset the largest number of elements Apple has ever put on a single chip.

Previously, Macs used multiple chips for CPUs, input-output (I / O) systems, security, and more. With the M1, all of these technologies are combined into one chipset to provide a better level of integration and power efficiency.

The M1 also features an integrated memory architecture that unites high bandwidth, low latency memory into a single, custom package. This allows all the technologies on the chip to access the same data without the need to copy it between different pools of memory.

Furthermore, this M1 features an 8-core CPU consisting of four high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. These four cores provide computing power to deliver CPU performance with lower power usage, while being efficient and fast.

The GPU in M1 is also designed with an Octa-core architectural design with a total of 128 execution units. Apple states that this GPU has a rating of 2.6 TFLOPS, which indicates that it is the fastest.

The M1’s 16-core Neural Engine will run machine learning algorithms at 11 TOPS. There is also an advanced media encode / decode engine in the chipset as well as an image signal processor.
