KOMPAS.com – Former Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Edhy Prabowo arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission ( NCP) related bribery case related to the licensing of ponds, businesses, or fisheries management or other similar marine commodities in 2020.

Edhy and his wife, Iis Rosita Dewi, were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, shortly after landing from the United States.

From this arrest, it was discovered that Edhy and his wife shopped a number of luxury items at a price of Rp. 750 million during a work visit to Hawaii, November 21-23, 2020.

Reporting from the official website Britannica, Rolex history begins when a young man named Hans Wilsdorf (24) or the inventor of Rolex, moved from Germany to Swiss.

At that time, the name Rolex did not exist in his mind.

In Switzerland, Wilsdorf found work at a watch exporting company in La Chaux-de-Fonds, one of the centers of the Swiss horology industry.

Then, he moved to London, England and founded a company specializing in the distribution of timepieces in 1905.

He did not establish this company alone, but together with his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis.

The company name was decided to become “Wilsdorf & Davis Ltd”.

The company focuses on assembling and marketing watches using works imported from Switzerland.

At that time, some men still wore watches or large pocket watches and they began to imagine the clocks worn on the wrist.

The thought occurred because at that time the watch was not very accurate. However, Wilsdorf predicts that the watch will not only be elegant, but reliable.

To convince the public of the reliability of this innovative and tough watch, he equipped it with a small, high-precision movement that was manufactured by the Swiss watchmaking company Bienne.

Rolex name

Reporting from the official website Rolex, Wilsdorf says that he tries to combine all the alphabets in any way to find his trademark name.

“I managed to get a few hundred names, but all of them didn’t seem quite right. One morning, while I was riding a horse-drawn carriage along Cheapside in London, I suddenly heard the whisper of ‘Rolex’,” said the young German.

As a result, Wilsdorf came up with the brand name Rolex, and registered the name as a trademark in 1908.

Subsequently, Wilsdorf set out to make watches that were both manly and fashionable.

In 1914, in an early display of his extraordinary talent for generating publicity, Wilsdorf asked the British government to certify the Rolex as the first watch to pass the endurance and accuracy tests normally only given to marine chronometers.

Later, the company changed its name to Rolex Watch Co. Ltd. in 1915.

Seeing its growing business, Rolex opened an office in Geneva in 1919 and made this office its headquarters.

Wilsdorf also adopted the name of a French-language company, Montres Rolex SA.

Generally, a brand has an iconic logo. Wilsdorf registered the crown of thorns “logo” as his trademark in 1925.

In 1926, the company introduced the watertight and airtight Rolex Oyster model watches.

Oyster Perpetual, is said to be the first automatic spinner watch, and was followed five years later.

In 1927, Wilsdorf gave a Mercedes Gleitze, the first British woman to swim the English Channel, a Rolex to wear around her wrist when trying to cross the Channel.

Not only that, Rolex also received support from an English racer, Sir Malcolm Campbell. He wore a Rolex watch during races in the 1930s.

Entering the XXI century, Rolex maintains its name in the news and polishes its image by sponsoring sporting events in fields such as motor racing, yacht racing and horse riding.

In about 2002, in response to widespread forgery, Rolex began attaching the nearly microscopic laser engraving of the crown trademark to its watch crystals as a safety device.
