German reporter beaten up at neo-Nazi demo in Athens

He was the creator of a documentary about the right-wing radical Greek party “Golden Dawn” – now a reporter from Deutsche Welle was attacked at a meeting in Athens.

At a demonstration by right-wing extremists in Athens a German journalist has been attacked and injured. He was beaten for four and a half minutes during the meeting on Sunday, the reporter Thomas Jacobi, who works for Deutsche Welle and the French newspaper “La Croix”, told the Greek news portal “Proto Thema”. A member of the AFP news agency saw Jacobi bleeding in the face.

According to the police, around 370 people took part in the demonstration on Syntagma Square, including members of the neo-Nazi party Golden morning glow (Chrysi Avgi). Jacobi criticized that the police initially did not intervene when he was beaten. For him, the fact that officials only appeared after four and a half minutes was “the most shocking” thing about the incident.

The Greek government spokesman, Stelios Petsas, condemned the “fascist attack” on Jacobi. According to him, an investigation has been opened. Jacobi, in turn, announced a lawsuit, the Greek news agency ANA reported.

Jacobi had worked on a documentary from 2016 about the golden dawn. He assumes that he was attacked during the demonstration on Sunday because participants recognized him. Jacobi – like a cameraman and a photo reporter – had been physically attacked a year ago during a demonstration by the neo-Nazi party in Athens.
