The EU wants to ban Cola, ban pets, abolish cash – false claims like these keep floating around the internet. To counteract this, the German Press Agency (dpa) has started a new video series with media literacy tips in social media format. The clips are distributed via channels such as Instagram and TikTok and show young users how they can recognize false information themselves. The series is part of the international project “Think Twice”, which the dpa initiated to curb disinformation. The first video is now available under the hashtag #Stopthinktwicecheck and at www.stop-thinktwice-check.de to find.

In addition, the next step will be to offer accompanying teaching materials for schools. From April 2024, young people will also have the opportunity to take part in the project. You can take part in video conferences and workshops and create your own videos in a community with a virtual newsroom.

“Social media is an important source of information, especially for younger people. In order not to fall for fake news, they have to be able to correctly assess sources and recognize warning signs,” says the head of the dpa fact check team, Teresa Dapp. “With our new videos, we convey the necessary knowledge in a simple and clear way.”

The current example of the conflict between Israel and the terrorist organization Hamas shows how rapidly disinformation is spreading on the Internet. There are also tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney, with which even laypeople can create deceptively real content using artificial intelligence.

The EU-funded project runs until the end of September 2025 and brings together partners from several countries. Also involved is the #UseTheNews initiative launched by the dpa, which aims to promote the news literacy of young people with a “Year of News” in 2024. Among other things, news is prepared on a so-called social news desk in such a way that teenagers and young adults recognize the connection to their own real life.
