Geopolitical Turbulence and the Role of Germany, France, and Great Britain: A Reflection on Baltic States’ Voice in the EU and NATO

I interviewed you in these same rooms exactly two years ago. At that time, you invited us, the Baltic states, to stand up for ourselves more loudly in the European Union and NATO, to make them hear us. It has now been more than a year and a half since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Do you think we have made them listen to us? And most importantly, have they responded with all the means available to them?

No. As I have already emphasized for several years, a serious geopolitical turbulence is beginning at the moment, to which Europe is not immune, especially the Baltic States. In my opinion, the problem is not in the United States. Because the US will do what it can, but its resources will be stretched all over the world because of China. The problem is in three large Western European countries – Germany, France and my country, Great Britain.

Britain is greatly increasing its defense budget. We have the largest shipbuilding programs since World War II. We are building new nuclear-powered submarines, new squadron minesweepers, new frigates. But it is for Britain’s defence. Germany talks about “Zeitenwende” but doesn’t really deliver. France is always France, always talking but never doing. Until these three countries come together and realize that it is necessary to remove the pressure from the USA… It should be remembered that these countries account for 70% of the entire European defense budget and almost 90% of the entire defense technology production in Europe.

I was shocked to hear today at the conference,
