Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

The Galaxy Z Flip costs 15 thousand pesos less than the Galaxy Fold, which opens the door for this flexible technology to become increasingly affordable, however, there are still features and functions that could be improved.

A new experience

• Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip is the first foldable phone I try and really want to continue using. When I put my chip, downloaded my applications and put my music, I felt strangely back in 2004, using one of the flip-phones that abounded at the time, although this time, with a modern flip-phone and marking the line of how the phones of the near future could be.
• Its 6.7-inch screen is narrow and elongated, which entails advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages is that it can be operated with one hand and that by dividing the screen between two applications, the space is distributed comfortably. The disadvantage is that the keyboard is a bit narrow compared to wider phones, and that it takes a while to get used to it.
• Samsung improved the hinge that allows the phone to bend, but when extended, the screen is not completely smooth and feels a kind of irregularity in the center. It is normal, and I ended up getting used to it, although the ideal of the industry is that this disappears in future models of folding phones. At least, it doesn’t interfere with the operation or resolution, which looks as good as any high-end Samsung phone.

Selfies: Normal vs. Dynamic Focus

On the screen there is also a small hole where its 10 MP front camera is located. The photographic results are as good as in any high-end Samsung, even with portrait mode activated, which the company calls Dynamic Focus.

Wide angle vs normal lens

Night mode takes a few seconds to take the picture, but it can make even the stars look.

The dual rear camera of the Galaxy Z Flip meets and is up to its two 12 MP lenses, including one wide angle. However, it falls short if compared to that of any of the Galaxy S20 range, which stood out this year for the emphasis on its zoom.

External display, battery and security

• While Motorola’s Moto RAZR included an external 2.7-inch screen to interact with notifications and apps without opening the phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip only has a small 1.1-inch panel for this function.
• However, it works very well to answer or hang up incoming calls, change and pause songs in playback and see which apps you have notifications, but without being able to read them.
• The 3,300 mAh battery, meanwhile, gave me up all day, although without excessive use. The charging on its USB-C port is fast, and although it also supports wireless charging, the phone gets too hot, which gave me no confidence.
• Finally, fingerprint unlocking on one of its sides works fast, and is most comfortable given the design of the equipment. I have the doubt, however, if a future Samsung flexible smartphone will already have fingerprint unlock on the screen.

The best

His design. The Galaxy Z Flip made a giant leap over the Galaxy Fold and now makes more sense as a flexible phone proposal that you can use in your day to day. When I folded, I could store it even in my shirt bag, and it was an easy-to-use device, even with one hand. If Samsung’s future in terms of foldable telephony remains on this route, I see myself in a couple of years adopting this proposal.

Worst

The Galaxy Z Flip is still a very delicate phone that you have to take care of to the extreme. Although its screen is made of glass, it is scratched just as easily as plastic; Although it has a more portable design, it is still vulnerable to water and dust. And even if you spend 33 thousand pesos on it, there is no guarantee that it will last for many years, although Samsung offers a free screen change if it is damaged.
