Hamburg (dpa) – After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the shipping company MSC has now also canceled its cruise calls on St. Petersburg. The four ships that had the Russian Baltic Sea port on the cruise schedule “will no longer call at the Russian city from the end of May to October because the health and safety of guests and crew is the top priority,” MSC Cruises said late Monday evening. The shipping company is in contact with alternative ports such as Stockholm, Helsinki or Tallinn. “There are currently no MSC Cruises ships calling at St. Petersburg.”

A spokeswoman for Phoenix Reisen said on request on Tuesday that the cruise operator was in talks with shipping companies and that a definitive decision was still pending. However, Phoenix Reisen has already canceled Russia river cruises for April and May as a “direct measure”. “We reserve the right to take further steps,” said the spokeswoman.

The day before, Tui Cruises and Aida Cruises had already announced that they were removing St. Petersburg from the program. A spokeswoman for Aida Cruises said that the shipping company is viewing the events with great concern and hopes for a peaceful solution soon. The shipping company will “adjust the itinerary of our cruise ships in the 2022 summer season in the Baltic Sea region and inform our guests about the changes as soon as possible,” the spokeswoman announced on request.

Tui Cruises had announced: “Against the background of the events, we have decided for ethical and moral reasons to adjust the timetables of our Baltic Sea cruises from May to October 2022: We will no longer call at St. Petersburg.” The calls would probably be replaced by Klaipeda (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia) or Copenhagen (Denmark) and Visby (Sweden).
