Where do these stories come from?
Danielle GIRL : “They were born out of a discussion that I overheard one evening when I was having dinner in a restaurant in Nancy. There were two women next to me. One of them was crying. It caught my attention. Our eyes met. She smiled at me. I saw a lot of suffering in that look and in what I had just heard. I wanted to transcribe this suffering through short stories without unnecessary verbiage and without concealing the complexity of life and human relationships. I illustrated this aspect at the beginning of my book with obscure mathematical formulas forgotten by my colleagues in the staff room. »
What message would you like to pass on to women?
“I would simply like to tell them that they don’t listen to themselves enough, that they don’t fully live out their desires. They are still subjected to decades of servitude which confine them to the smooth running of the home and the education of the children. In this last task, in particular, they are still today too often alone to manage. And it’s not easy ! Those who practice a trade must be much more efficient than men to achieve purely professional recognition. They are still considered good at dealing exclusively with so-called secondary tasks. They are not taken seriously and too little recognized for their skills, however obvious, which should enable them to access positions and salaries similar to men. Sometimes, they are only there for the aesthetics of a meeting or the concern of the quotas. »
You describe toxic men.
“We are made to believe that the lines are moving. The reality is different. And even if the legislation has evolved a lot to improve the lives of women, machismo, disdain and mockery are still too often in place. Respect for women should not go through the law. We often have the impression of not exchanging with men on equal terms. Women must be even more courageous and determined to build their lives and change things. Too many of them are still dependent on men, romantically or financially. Women continue to suffer and above all to be silent, accepting the unacceptable, by culture, by education, for their children, for fear of what will be said… Or quite simply and dramatically, because they don’t have no other solution. This often makes me angry. Women do not yet think enough about their pleasure, which is not the case with men, who do not have the same scruples. »
