From Discotheques to Doctor’s Offices: The Remarkable Journey of Jānis Šipkēvicas

To the presenter Jānis Šipkēvicas, who also worked at the Poligrafiķu club, Krastiņš remembers that discotheques were made by the most current music of the time. “I was brought by Gunta Lazdāne, the medical mafia – the one that rules over all the doctors,” laughs Krastiņš, who is now a beloved doctor at the Liepāja Regional Hospital, about his arrival at the post of DJ.

“I came to listen at first, and at that time the disco appeared in the basement of “Polygrafikai”, not in the big hall, but in the small basement, there was a row of chairs along the walls, where young men and women of various ages sat with solemn faces, and one man with, I think, then the vinyl player said – now we will listen to this and that, such and such an artist, such and such a name, and now the first song, and everyone listened with open mouths. It was a disco,” says Krastiņš.

He agrees with Shipkevic that the disco turned into something like an audio lecture. “I will hardly be able to highlight the smell, but the atmosphere there was definitely very special, because the environment, the atmosphere, everything that you described, it is really unforgettable,” Krastiņš shares his memories. “It was a wonderful place where you could escape, take refuge from the stupidity of the official environment that was so prevalent at that time. It was a wonderful escape.”
