A group of scientists from the University of Provence conducted an experiment to determine the temperature at which coronavirus dies. Results published on biological preprint portal bioRxiv.
During the experiment, they found that it turned out to be more effective to affect the coronavirus at a temperature of 92 ° C for 15 minutes – during this time it completely died. The researchers also tested the effectiveness of exposure to 56 ° C for 30 minutes and 60 ° C for an hour, but this method was less effective. At the same time, heating to 60 ° C for an hour is the standard protocol for virus deactivation, which is used in most laboratories where patient analyzes are examined.
For their study, French scientists used African green monkey kidney cells infected with a strain of coronavirus from a patient from Germany. Cells were placed in two tubes: with a clean medium and with proteins of animal origin to simulate real, not sterile, conditions. After the standard heat treatment procedure, the virus was deactivated in a clean test tube, but not completely in a non-sterile one.
