Freedom of Saudi Princess After Spent 3 Years in Jail Without Charges

Princess of Saudi Arabia and his son can finally breathe fresh air after 3 years in prison. They previously languished behind bars without charge in the capital Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

She is Princess Basmah bint Saud (57). A member of the royal family long seen as a supporter of women’s rights and a constitutional monarchy.

Reported by AFP and Reuters, Sunday (9/1/2022) the news of the release was delivered by a human rights group (HAM) on Saturday (8/1) local time. Putri Basmah has been detained since March 2019.

“The princess (Basmah bint Saud) and daughter Suhoud have been released,” human rights group ALQST reported on Twitter.

“He was denied the medical treatment he needed for a potentially life-threatening condition,” the rights group added.

“During his detention no charges were leveled against him.”

Last April 2020, Princess of Saudi Arabia it pleaded with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to release him on health grounds.

Regarding this case, Saudi Royal Officials have not yet commented.

Princess Basmah was arrested shortly before plans to leave for Switzerland for medical treatment. The information came from a source close to the royal family. However, his illness was never disclosed.

Princess Basmah is being held in Al-Ha’ir prison. In this prison many other political prisoners are held.

To the United Nations (UN) in 2020, in written testimony, his family said his detention was most likely due to “his record as an outspoken critic of abuses”. Princess Basmah is also considered an ally of Mohammed bin Nayef.
