With ten new corona infections, Opwijk is the most severely affected municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant. Four of these infections are within the same family. The situation is also closely monitored in the facilities municipality of Linkebeek.

In Opwijk, there have been ten new corona cases out of 14,547 inhabitants in the past seven days. Converted to infections per 100,000 inhabitants, this amounts to 69 cases. There has been at least one new case for two days in a row. In Linkebeek, there have been three new coronation cases out of 4,671 inhabitants in the past seven days. Converted to infections per 100,000 inhabitants, this amounts to 64 cases.
The four family members in Opwijk are quarantined at home. Mayor Albert Beerens (Open VLD) has instructed the police to carry out extra checks in the municipality. According to the mayor, many residents of Opwijk apply the rules less strictly. He refers to the catering industry and to the weekly market, where people sometimes forget to keep the necessary distance.
The Opwijk aldermen’s college will meet tomorrow / Wednesday to discuss any new measures. Among other things, the neighboring municipality of Merchtem is being looked at, where the mouth mask is mandatory during the weekly market. The list of events is also examined.
