Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Deputy Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Revealing Official Secrets

Pakistani Court Sentences Ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan to 10 Years in Prison

Verdict Ignites Backlash and Raises Concerns Over Free and Fair Elections

Islamabad, Pakistan (AP) – In a major blow to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, a special court in Rawalpindi has sentenced him and his party deputy, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, to 10 years in prison for revealing official secrets. The verdict, announced on Tuesday, has sparked swift criticism from Khan’s followers and added to his legal woes. Khan, a former cricket star turned Islamist politician, is currently serving a three-year prison sentence in a separate corruption case.

Appeal on the Horizon

According to Zulfiqar Bukhari, the spokesman for Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Khan’s legal team is planning to appeal the conviction before the Islamabad High Court on Wednesday. With the appeal process underway, Khan’s political future remains uncertain.

Implications for Parliamentary Elections

Amidst the impending parliamentary elections in Pakistan on February 8, this verdict deals a significant blow to Khan’s desire to participate in the race. Despite being barred from running due to a previous criminal conviction, Khan still holds a considerable political influence due to his grassroots following and anti-establishment rhetoric.

Crippling Crackdown on Supporters

However, the political scenario in Pakistan has already experienced its fair share of volatility. Following Khan’s arrest in May 2023, violent demonstrations erupted throughout the country. Authorities swiftly cracked down on Khan’s supporters and party, prompting concerns regarding the integrity and fairness of the upcoming parliamentary election. Activists and the human rights commission have criticized the government’s actions and highlighted the potential for pre-poll rigging.

Decrypting the Cipher Case

The Cipher case, one of more than 150 cases against Khan, emerged as a pivotal turning point in his controversial career. The allegations revolve around Khan waving a confidential classified cable during a rally, purportedly demonstrating threats against his security and suggesting his ouster as a U.S.-backed conspiracy. However, Pakistan’s government and the United States have both denied these claims.

Party Fights Back

Khan’s PTI has condemned the ruling, declaring it a “sham trial” and arguing that the judge did not allow Khan and Qureshi’s lawyers to defend them adequately. Nonetheless, the party has called upon its supporters to maintain peaceful conduct, urging them to focus on the upcoming election.

Pakistan’s Road to Democracy

Political analyst Muhammad Ali asserts that the verdict was not unexpected, as both Khan and Qureshi caused considerable damage to Pakistan’s diplomatic ties with the United States and caused embarrassment to the then-Pakistani Ambassador to the United States, Asad Majeed. While the trial might have seemed predictable, it represents a crucial juncture in Pakistan’s pursuit of a democratic path.
