Doha (Reuters) – Spain coach Luis Enrique (52) suffered a 1-2 comeback defeat to Japan in their final World Cup Group E match in Qatar on 1st and expressed dissatisfaction.
Spain took the lead in the first half, but conceded twice early in the second half. As a result, Japan finished first in the group and Spain finished second. Japan will face Croatia, runners-up at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, in the first round of the finals. Spain went to war with Morocco.
At the post-match press conference, coach Luis Enrique said: “I’m not happy at all. We passed (the primary league), but we wanted to win this match and finish first. 2 points were scored by , and we couldn’t do it. We have been dismantled.
He added: “We did everything possible not to make any mistakes (regarding player appointments and tactics). We tried to create chances by lowering our striker in midfield.”
Costa Rica temporarily led Germany in their other Group E match. “If I had known about this situation, I would have had a heart attack,” said Luis Enrique. Had Costa Rica won this game, Spain would have been eliminated.
