The information was revealed by the judgment of the Court of Appeal.

Football Leaks creator Rui Pinto, in custody and charged with 90 crimes, had an “online business” selling books and antiques with his father in Budapest, the city where he lived until he was arrested.

The information was revealed by the judgment of the Lisbon Court of Appeal, to which Lusa had access this Tuesday, which rejects the hacker’s defense appeal, which intended to remove the preventive detention measure, the most serious.

It contains an excerpt of interrogation in which the Portuguese, 30 years old, explains that he is “unemployed” in Portugal, having this business in Budapest.

“This has to do with old books, with antiques, because Hungary was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the official language was German, and there was a variety of trade, sale of books from Germany to the Austro-Hungarian empire and then, with the beginning of the second world war, many of these books in Germany disappeared “, he explained, recalling the lists of banned books, and referred that in Budapest” there was a great opportunity to find such books “.

Asked by the judge if “this is where he earns his livelihood”, Rui Pinto confirms and explains that he never had an employment contract, living in Budapest since February 2015, then working with the collection of several books and pieces, first, and then the resale, through “websites for that”.

“We obtained [os bens que depois eram vendidos] through fairs, antique markets, bookstores. (…) In Hungary, and in online auctions in Hungary. (…) Old and ephemeral books, basically are papers that were not supposed to last for several years, but that happily did, “said the defendant in a lawsuit surrounding the Football Leaks case.

The Lisbon Court of Appeal today decided to “dismiss the appeal” by Rui Pinto, creator of Football Leaks, and kept the hacker in pre-trial detention until he was tried for 90 crimes.

“Under the terms and on the grounds indicated, the appeal presented by the defendant Rui Pedro Gonçalves Pinto is dismissed”, can be read in the court’s judgment, which decided to keep the measure applied, which the ‘hacker’ had appealed, after have been preventively detained in March 2019.

Among the accusations are crimes of illegitimate access, improper access, violation of correspondence, computer sabotage and extortion attempt, with the Lisbon Criminal Instruction Court deciding to drop 57 crimes in relation to the prosecution of the Public Ministry in September 2019.

After being arrested in Hungary and extradited to Portugal, under an international mandate, Rui Pinto has been in prison since March 2019, having recently revealed that he delivered a hard drive to the Whistleblower Protection Platform in Africa, which allowed the recent disclosure Luanda Leaks, a corruption case related to the Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos.
