Florida reports 10,000 new infections in one day

Washington (Reuters) – The coronavirus is still on the rise in the US.

In Florida alone, more than 10,000 new cases were registered on Thursday – more than ever in a day in the state of 21 million people. With New York, only one other US state has ever reported more than 10,000 new infections in one day. That was already the case on April 10th. The pandemic has spread across the United States from the northeast to the south and west. To stop the wave of contagion, some states suspended the easing of regulations that had already been initiated. Florida, popular as a vacation destination, has closed bars and some beaches. There is no mask requirement.

US Vice President Mike Pence said before a visit to Florida that he saw no need for a mask requirement in the whole of the USA. Together with President Donald Trump, he supported the decisions of some states to pause the easing that has already started. There was not always agreement between Trump and the governors on how to proceed against the coronavirus. Apart from Florida, the pathogen is currently rife in California, Arizona and Texas. In total, more than 2.7 million corona infections have been registered in the USA. According to official statistics, over 128,000 people died there of Covid-19. No country is as badly affected by the pandemic as the USA.
