Florida Governor DeSantis Calls for Deportation of Ilhan Omar Over Mistranslated Remarks

Washington: US MP Ilhan Umar, who is of Somali origin, has been widely criticized for the wrong translation of his speech on Somalia.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for Somali-born Ilhan Omar to be expelled from Congress and deported.

DeSantis recently withdrew from the US presidential race and endorsed Donald Trump.

Ilhan is facing criticism for remarks he made in a speech he gave to Somali-Americans in Minneapolis. Middle East Eye reported that a mistranslation of the speech circulating on social media said that as Somalis we love each other.

“There are areas of discomfort where we kill each other. But actually we are an organized society. Brothers and sisters, of the same blood, first we are Somalis and then Muslims. Those who protect each other and come to a rescue and help other Muslims,’ Ilhan is falsely reported to have said.

The video, with an unconfirmed translation, was circulated on social media by Rhoda Jama Elmi, Deputy Foreign Minister of Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991.

Roda Jama Elmi said that Ilhan has committed racial hatred and her fellow MPs should listen to what Ilhan says in public.

At the same time, Ilhan and the Somali speakers said through X that the translation of the video was wrong.

Ilhan reposted Ilhan’s video, which was posted by a Somali analyst named Abdirashid Hashi, who correctly translated it.

‘We Somalis love each other. There is a possibility that some of us may get into trouble with each other. But when things get tough, we run. We are brothers and sisters and support each other.

Those who identify as Somalis and Muslims. Coming forward to help each other and help their brothers and sisters.

Somalia belongs to all Somalis. Somalia is one. Our country is not divided. That land was taken from us. With God’s grace, we will regain it once, but now we are not divided,’ is the original translation of Ilhan’s speech.

In 2019, Ilhan was elected as the first Somali American member of Congress in US history and is one of the first two Muslim women to be sworn into the US Congress.

Noted for her strong criticism of America’s foreign policy and US military operations, Ilhan is constantly attacked as a black woman and as a Muslim woman.

Ilhan is facing criticism even from his own party, the Democratic Party.
