As many women were killed by men in Vienna in 24 hours as in the entire year of 2023.
Vienna (OTS) – On Friday morning, a mother and her daughter were found dead in their apartment in Vienna Erdberg. The police assume a double murder in the family environment. Three women were brutally murdered a few hours later in a bar in Vienna Brigittenau.
The Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters Association (AÖF) is deeply affected and would like to express its sincere condolences to all the victims’ relatives.
In 2023, there were 26 femicides across Austria and an additional 51 attempted murders or cases of serious violence against women. Violence against women is a structural and societal problem. Austria is the only country in the EU where more women than men are killed at the hands of men. Violence affects every third woman in Austria.
We call for further strengthening of victim protection for women affected by violence. Every woman in Austria has the right to a life free of violence. The victims must be protected even more and the perpetrators must be held accountable. In addition, we must expand further prevention projects and take a clear stance against any form of violence.
