It is a suspected case that the head of the health department, Regine Krause-Döring, had already reported the day before in an online conversation with Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (46, CDU). A 39-year-old man who was neither abroad nor had contact with someone who was abroad is affected.
The special Corona-PCR tests for variants are usually only initiated if there is justified suspicion. According to the university clinic that is handling the case, there were abnormalities during pre-tests that indicate the Omikron variant. The result of the whole genome sequencing is not expected until the end of the week.
The Saxon Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that an assessment of the risk from Omikron is currently not possible because too little is known about the infectious power of the new mutation.

Nor can it be estimated how well the currently available vaccines protect against infection. According to the experience so far, a spread of the variant can probably no longer be prevented, according to the ministry.

In the meantime, cases of the variant have emerged in a number of countries – including Germany. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the Corona variant, which was first discovered in southern Africa, on Friday as “worrying”.
The EU health authority ECDC speaks of serious concerns that Omikron could significantly reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines and increase the risk of reinfection. The exact effects of the mutant have not yet been determined.
Saxony is considered a nationwide Corona hotspot – the seven-day incidence on Tuesday, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), was 1268.9. In many places the hospitals and intensive care units are overloaded. For the first time, the Bundeswehr will also fly intensive care patients from Saxony to North Rhine-Westphalia for treatment on Wednesday. According to information from the German Press Agency, the Luftwaffe’s special aircraft will bring the seriously ill from Dresden to Cologne on Wednesday.
