“There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in an interview with Xinhua, which was launched Friday (12/31/2021).

“This is an undeniable historical and legal fact. Despite the political antagonism between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait as a result of the civil war many years ago, China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been and will not be broken, “Wang continued.
Tensions are rising between Taipei and Beijing — which regard Taiwan as a hostile Chinese province.
The two separated in 1949 after the Chinese civil war and China has since increased pressure on the island, including opposing its involvement in international organizations.
The US does not officially recognize Taiwan as a country, but maintains an unofficial alliance and has adopted a policy of “strategic ambiguity.”
Beijing has increased its presence near Taiwan and has sent hundreds of warplanes towards its defense zone, coinciding with President Xi Jinping’s call for Taiwan to be brought to China as part of “peaceful reunification”.
President Biden was asked in October whether the US would defend Taiwan against a Chinese attack which Biden emphatically said that; “We are committed to doing that.”
