First Lady Lesotho indicted for murder of former woman prime minister

In Lesotho in southern Africa, the wife of Prime Minister Thomas Thabane has been charged. She would be behind the murder of her husband’s previous wife.

Maesiah Thabane has been on the run in recent weeks and did not respond to a call for questioning. After the police issued an arrest warrant against the prime minister’s 42-year-old wife, she reported to the police yesterday. She spent the night in a cell.

In Lesotho it has been rumored for years that Maesiah is the mastermind behind the murder of Prime Minister Lipolelo Thabane. In June 2017 she was shot at close range by armed men at her home in the capital Maseru. Lipolelo had not been living together with the now 80-year-old prime minister for a few years, but they were still officially married. Her husband had a relationship with the much younger Maesiah for quite some time.

Open relationship

During his first premiership in 2015, he already took Maesiah on state visits as if she were the First Lady. But Lipolelo, with whom the prime minister was in combat, did not want to give up the title. The judge finally decided that, as long as they were officially married, Lipolelo was entitled to the title and the additional privileges, such as financial allowances. This did not apply to Maesiah, the Prime Minister’s new partner.

The divorce was still not complete when Thomas Thabane became prime minister for the second time in 2017. Lipolelo was murdered two days before his inauguration. That paved the way for the premier’s marriage to Maesiah, who thus received the coveted First Lady title.

Proof against president

It seems that the case has been covered up for a long time. He started rolling again through the testimony of a police commissioner who went to court to challenge his resignation. According to him, Prime Minister Thabane wants to fire him because he has evidence against his wife and also for involvement from the prime minister himself. The prime minister’s cell phone would have been called from the murder location. The police chief wanted to know who called.

The prime minister has been questioned. Several hundred protesters demanded his resignation in January, when Maesiah was on the run. He then said he wanted to leave, but gave his age as the reason for his departure and not the investigation into the murder of his former wife. He did not give a date for his departure.
