G7 Countries Commit to Long-Term Security Measures for Ukraine: Military Equipment, Financial Aid, and Deterrence against Russia

In a statement of the G7 countries, obtained by the news agency AFP, it is said that the G7 countries will work individually with Ukraine on specific, bilateral, long-term security commitments and measures to ensure a stable force capable of protecting Ukraine now and deterring Russia from aggression in the future.

Ukraine’s international supporters are trying to convince Kyiv of their support after NATO refused to invite Ukraine to become a member of the alliance.

The G7 – the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan – announced that they will try to agree on providing the armed forces of Ukraine with modern military equipment on land, in the air and at sea. This would mean that “priority will be air defense, artillery and long-range weapons, armored vehicles and other important capabilities such as combat aviation,” the statement said.

The G7 states said they would offer to provide prompt military and financial assistance to Ukraine “in the event of an armed attack by Russia in the future.” They will also seek to “impose economic and other costs on Russia” if it starts a new war after this conflict ends.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously welcomed the pledges made during the NATO summit in Vilnius, but said they could not replace Kyiv’s main goal of joining the alliance.

NATO countries are very cautious about making specific promises to Ukraine, fearing that they could draw the West into a war with Moscow. But Western leaders insist they want to show the Kremlin that it will not expect a drop in Western support for Ukraine.
