First Dutch corona patient was not contagious during carnival NOW

The Noord-Brabant man with the corona virus who is quarantined at the Elisabeth TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg, was not contagious during the days that he celebrated the carnival. He is doing well, the mayor of Tilburg, a spokesperson for the hospital and the GGD reported during a press conference on Friday.

According to Mayor Theo Weterings, the patient is doing well. It is examined whether the man from Loon op Zand can remain in quarantine at home. In that case the man will remain in isolation there.

The mayor also emphasizes that the patient has acted well. When he got symptoms of the virus, he contacted the doctor. The man was then examined and admitted to the hospital.

The patient is said to have celebrated carnival in Tilburg last week. Weterings emphasizes that the man was not contagious during this period. There is also no reason, according to the mayor, to cancel events in the city in the coming period.

Man was treated directly in isolation

The man was admitted to the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg on Wednesday. Due to a “strong suspicion” of contamination, he was treated directly in isolation according to the protocol. Thursday evening it turned out that he indeed had the COVID-19 virus.

With a contact investigation, the GGD maps out with whom the man, who recently visited the Italian region of Lombardy, has been in contact. These people are then monitored and have to record their temperature twice a day and pass it on to the GGD.

During the contact investigation, dozens of people were mapped on Tuesday and Wednesday. These are not carnival lovers. They also have no complaints yet. People who live in the street of the patient do not have to worry according to the GGD. Only people who have been in close contact with him are tested for contamination. The GGD hopes to complete the investigation on Friday.

There is no link between this man and the second patient: a woman who remains in isolation at home in Diemen. They were both recently in Lombardy. This region is considered a risk area because the virus is widespread.

The COVID-19 virus (coronavirus) in short:

  • The virus spreads mainly through cough and sneeze drops that hang in the air for a short time. Anyone who shows no symptoms is hardly a risk of infection.
  • Someone can infect two or three others on average (less than, for example, measles). However, this figure is falling due to all precautions.
  • The vast majority have mild (flu-like) symptoms.
  • Almost all deaths concern older or already sick people.
