First Aid Day at Miriam Lundner Elementary School: Children Learn Life-Saving Skills

Thursdays It’s first aid day in the after-school care center at the Miriam Lundner Elementary School in Halberstadt. Aliya, Mia and numerous of their classmates sit in a circle around a large red blanket on the first floor with teacher Torsten Volkmann. Mia is now lying in the middle on the blanket. She remains motionless. Her friend Aliya speaks to her and shakes her slightly. The two girls practice and demonstrate what to do if you find a motionless person. The other children watch with interest and give tips themselves.

Shortly afterwards there is great excitement. Head bandages are practiced. Thats fun. Headmaster Sebastian Lütgert also gets a head bandaged by one of his students, which causes great amusement.

Fourteen children came this time, a few are sick. “There are more and more,” says Torsten Volkmann, pleased about the increasing interest. The after-school teacher leads the first aid course at the elementary school in Halberstadt. Such projects usually only run in high schools and secondary schools. In the Harz district, the people of Halberstadt are the first to implement it at a primary school.

DRK supports with associations and technology

The course has been taking place once a week since the beginning of the year. Then children in the third and fourth grades meet for medical training. For this purpose, the after-school care center and school have signed a cooperation agreement with the Quedlinburg/Halberstadt district association of the German Red Cross. Those involved named the project “Children Helping Children”. As a result, DRK employees are available to help. The DRK supports the project, for example, with bandages or, as this time, with hands-on technology.

DRK employee Martin Schüller drove up in an ambulance. It’s the hit of the afternoon. The children explore the interior of the vehicle and listen to Schüller’s explanations. He is very enthusiastic about the children’s interest. “When you see the enthusiasm with which they are involved, it’s really fun,” said the 24-year-old. He thinks it’s good to familiarize children with first aid knowledge as early as possible.
