Finally something interesting. 48 hours with the Motorola Razr 5G

In all my adventure with reviewing phones, I have not yet encountered a second case where there would be such a huge improvement between the first generation of the product. Moto Razr 5G impresses from the first contact.

I only spent 48 hours with the new Motorola Razr 5G, but I can already see that everything on paper seemed to be a progress over the previous Motorola Razr is indeed so.

Motorola Razr 5G it should look like this from the beginning.

Where to start? You can feel the qualitative leap after taking the phone in your hand. Although the shape has not changed at all compared to its predecessor, it feels completely different to the touch. Instead of a squeaky, plastic housing, we have a solid (and unfortunately also extremely slippery) piece of glass and metal that makes a phenomenal impression to the touch, and finally looks adequate to the price you have to pay for this phone.

Speaking of things that do not squeak – this also applies to the display. It’s still the same pOLED panel with a diagonal of 6.2 ”and a resolution of 2142 x 876. You can still see delicate bumps in three places against the light, which I stopped paying attention to about 15 seconds after taking the phone out of the box. This time, however, the display does not make a sound when unfolding the phone. It does not creak, it does not creak.

The gap at the hinge, which in the previous version was so large that you could insert a match, has also disappeared. The Motorola Razr 5G screen is a little deeper, thanks to which the display folds almost perfectly flush with the hinge and you cannot see it moving, hiding it in the chin.

The constructionally new Motorola Razr 5G is a huge progress. However, I must admit that it is quite difficult to open it with one hand, because it is not very easy to pry the screen. Or maybe it’s a matter of practice that I don’t have yet.

Even more progress has been made under the hood.

Motorola Razr 5G works like a solid Android smartphone. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 processor in combination with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of data space translates into perfect smoothness of operation. While testing the phone over the weekend, I did not notice the slightest cut or slowdown. Perhaps the Snapdragon 765 is not as fast as the Snapdragon 865 in the competitor Galaxy Z Flip 5Gbut in everyday use it is hard to know the difference.

Surprisingly, the battery also surprised me positively. I expected that 2800 mAh would not be enough for the whole day of use, but I was wrong – after disconnecting the phone from the charger at 6:30 am, I connected it only in the evening around 22:00, still having 20%. energy reserve. However, it was not a very intense day, so I will wait for the full review with the final assessment of the battery.

Acceptable working time for such a small battery is largely due to the second display. The external panel with a diagonal of 2.7 ”and a resolution of 800 x 600 is what distinguishes Motorola from the competing Samsung and at the same time an element that completely changes the way you use this phone.

I will not lie to say that in more than half of the cases when the phone vibrated during the day, I did not feel the need to open the main display.

The auxiliary screen in the Razr 5G works in two ways. It can be an ordinary lock screen and act as a “Moto display” in other manufacturer’s phones – that is, from the level of the locked screen, we can read the notification, react to it (eg give a like on Facebook) or reply to a message.

In the second mode, the 2.7 ”display can function as a normal display and show full-size applications. From the settings level, we choose which applications are to be available at hand and voila, we can choose a Spotify playlist, find a podcast in the application, or even watch a video on YouTube.

The small screen uses much less power than the main screen more than twice as large and this is largely the reason why the Motorola Razr 5G is able to last a full day without charging. From the functional side, the screen changes one more thing – it is much more difficult to fall into the trap of the Twitter-Instagram-Facebook social Bermuda triangle. Since you don’t have to open the phone to check the notification, the temptation to check social networks becomes less.

Over the weekend, I did not get a closer look at the cameras. They also improved compared to the original and, if you believe the foreign reviews, sometimes they can even match the Galaxy Z Flip. However, I will also refrain from a full review with my opinion on optics.

There is some confusion among many industry colleagues about the concepts of foldable phones such as the Razr 5G or the Z Flip 5G. They prefer fold-out phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which allow more space on the display.

I say both concepts are hit and miss and each appeals to a different type of user.

For us, industry representatives who often work on the go and don’t despise any extra pixel in their workspace, the Z Fold 2 makes more sense.

But for someone who does not use the phone very often, and above all – would like to be able to carry the phone in his pocket again without looking comical, the Moto Razr 5G has all the meaning of this world.

The foldable Motorola is the first phone since the Lumia 610 that my other half was able to fit in the front pocket of my pants. Although not all of them, because over time the producers of women’s pants have apparently forgotten that the front pockets were also used to store items …

It is also the first phone in many years that does not stuff the pockets of my pants and with which I can sit comfortably without worrying about bending the case or tearing the pocket material.

The fact that I can have a normal-sized smartphone and then fold it in half and hide it is a real revelation. A convenience that I have forgotten over the last decade, when the phones got bigger and bigger, and neither the pockets nor our hands grew with them.

Finally something interesting!

The last two years in the world of consumer electronics, with smartphones at the fore, have been … boring resistance, what can I say. I really like the photo that Arek Dziermański from the competitive Whatnext website has recently posted on his Twitter:

I confess without hitting – despite the fact that almost all of the phones shown in the photo have been tested for me, I am able to recognize only half of them without a shadow of a doubt. So similar, sad and boring are the phones that have been appearing for several months.

The Motorola Razr 5G is a breath of fresh air. And even if the high price (PLN 6499) and the unusual format will stop most people from buying, in the end there is something on the market that can stop the tape outflow nudaphones. It is with great pleasure that I put the SIM card into the new Motorola and let you know in a few weeks how to live with a flip phone in 2020.
