The man who was arrested on Friday in connection with a fatal stabbing incident in Leiden is still detained. It may be a client of one of the organizations that are located in the building where the stabbing took place.

A man stabbed three people on Friday at the Diaconal Center De Bakkerij in the center of Leiden. Several organizations are located in the building of the center for church aid and services.

The perpetrator attacked a 66-year-old employee. He died on the spot from his injuries. During his flight, the perpetrator injured two more employees. One of them works for the Council for Refugees, that organization reported on Friday evening. According to a spokesman, the victim is doing well under the circumstances. The two injured were taken to hospital on Friday.

De Bakkerij wrote on its website on Friday that the man who stabbed was a client of one of the organizations in the building and “saw no other way out than this”. A police spokesperson previously called the message on De Bakkerij’s website “premature” and said it was not coordinated with the police.

The spokesperson declined to answer the question whether the arrested man is a client of one of the organisations. The police only said that the arrest was made “in connection with” the stabbing incident and that the man is still in custody.

Diaconal center will remain closed for a few days next week

De Bakkerij will remain closed for a few days next week, the diaconal center writes on the website.

There will be two meetings in the next few days. It concerns a private meeting for aftercare for those directly involved, volunteers and employees of the building and a public ‘silence meeting’ in the Hooglandse Church for all residents of Leiden.
