Fanny Smith with the 57th podium | Alpine skiing

The 29-year-old from Vaud takes second place at the World Cup opener in China and is on the podium for the 57th time in her career.

On the Secret Garden track, Smith made a successful comeback. In the second part of the final she moved up from 4th to 2nd place by passing the French Marielle Berger Sabbatel and the Austrian Katrin Ofner. Only the Swede Sandra Näslund could not catch up with the Swiss overall World Cup winner last season.

For the rest of the Swiss delegation, the first of eight World Cup races before the Olympic Games was disappointing. Sixtine Cousin, Talina Gantenbein and Sanna Lüdi failed in the quarter-finals.

Among the men, who are expected to have a tough selection battle for the four Olympic places in the coming weeks, the last six representatives failed in the round of 16. In the qualification, the Swiss had convinced with Ryan Regaz (1st), Alex Fiva (2nd) and Romain Détraz (6th) with three top 6 placements. (sda)
